WELCOME
THE VANGUARDS is a collection of Black women who have made a remarkable impact on society. Sharing a tune with the original definition of vanguard, we define popular culture, spark social movements, and break records. In a world where our voice is silenced, stolen, or appropriated, THE VANGUARDS is here to give credit where it’s long overdue.
HOW IT WORKS
We polled Black friends, family, and the larger community to share why each Vanguard is meaningful. Every page has details on the artist, quotes from the community, and resources linked for additional learning.
We post a new Vanguard every month, and our exhibitions are released quarterly. Our gallery is a never-ending source of praise, as we don’t archive anything. Sign up for our newsletter to receive updates on new drops.

About the Artist
Inspired by artists like Faith Ringgold, Lorna Simpson, and Mickalene Thomas, Jara Montez uses mixed media collages to digitally illustrate portraits of Black women. Her inspiration for THE VANGUARDS stems from wanting to see herself represented in museums, art history classes, and class textbooks.
THE VANGUARDS is her love letter to Black women.
