Missy elliott

b. 1971

Portsmouth, Virginia

Rapper, producer, songwriter

With deep pockets in production and even more in chart-topping songs, everyone remembers the moment Missy Elliott entered their lives. As a rapper, singer, songwriter and producer, she is responsible for every club hit and dance number over the last few decades, pushing the envelope with everything she does.

Raised in Virginia, Elliott got a jumpstart in production by joining Swing Mob (aka Da Bassment Cru), a collective of R&B and rap artists. While there, Missy and Timbaland took control of the airwaves and produced major hits for artists like SWV and Aaliyah.

Adding to her success, Elliott launched her solo career in 1997 by releasing her first album, Supa Dupa Fly. Which, by the way, was recorded in just two weeks.

  • Grammy, Best Female Solo Rap Performance, "Work It" (2003)

Grammy, Best Rap Solo Performance, "Get Ur Freak On"(2001)

  • “Every artist should be required to go through a crash course in creativity, taught by Missy Elliott.”
