Singer, actress
Diana Ross is the original glamour queen. As a solo artist and member of The Supremes, Ross has sold over 100 million albums.
Before The Supremes, the group was known as the Primettes - a quartet of singers from Ross' neighborhood that included Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, and Betty McGlown. Smokey Robinson arranged for them to play for Berry Gordy at Motown Records. After graduating high school the group signed to the label and The Supremes were born.
The Supremes were one of the defining acts of Motown Records, totaling 12 #1 singles on Billboard 100, and gaining commercial success for much of the 1960s.
Following the fame of The Supremes, Ross released her debut album, Diana Ross. Her version of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" became Ross' first number one hit as a solo artist.
Her achievements don't end after music. Ross forayed into acting, playing Billie Holiday in Lady Sings the Blues (Golden Globe) and strapping on a pair of ruby slippers to play Dorothy in The Wiz.
